Private Water Fly Fishing

Covid has led to the biggest increase in popularity in the sport of fly fishing since the movie “A River Runs Through It” came out. When you have a big city like Denver that is filled with a generally outdoorsy demographic, the nearby rivers are going to get a little crowded.  Because of this, we have seen a rapid rise in interest in our private water fly fishing locations.

That state of Colorado has some interesting water laws that allows landowners to own the river bottom.  Because of this, some of the best fisheries near Denver and Colorado Springs have a big ole fence around them.  At Colorado Trout Hunters, we have relationships with many of these landowners that allow us to bring our clients onto their private property in exchange for an access fee (commonly referred to as a “rod fee”.)

There are many benefits that come with fly fishing private water, (you can read about them here in a separate article entitled “Why Fish Private Water“) but the most obvious one is you are guaranteed solitude.  We are honored to boast one of the best line ups of private water fisheries in Colorado.  With the increase in popularity on these properties, the time to book days for the summer of 2023 is now!  Here is a quick rundown of some of our favorite private water leases and what they offer.

Rawhide Ranch – Only an hour from Denver and a chance at trophy trout!  Gorgeous scenery and almost 3 miles of river.  This is the perfect property to host your bigger group or corporate trip.

Abell River Ranch – One of the most scenic locations in the state.  Great dry fly fishing and chances at browns, rainbows, and cutthroat trout.

Shawnee Meadows – Proximity to Denver, only an hour away.  Similar to Rawhide Ranch, in that you have a chance at catching a trophy trout! Also a great spot to host bigger group trips.

Rolling J Ranch – Three different rivers on one property! You can catch them here on dries, nymphs and streamers.  Chance at trophy trout and crazy fish numbers as well.  Added bonus if you book in July as you may get to experience the famous green drake hatch.
