May Fishing Report

It has been a busy month of May over at Colorado Trout Hunters. The South Platte near the town of Deckers has been fishing fantastic and our go to for public water guided fly fishing trips. We have a lot of snow still up in the high country so flows on the Platte should continue to increase. Our go to flies for this stretch have been a larger point fly like an egg/worm/cranefly followed by a baetis imitation. The Blue Winged Olives have been hatching daily. The timing of the hatch varies depending on how far you are from the dam, but the important thing to remember is the BWOs are very active before they emerge so even if you don’t see them flying around, keep a Blue Wing pattern on your nymph rig. I have even been seeing some Caddis around. These bugs will become more and more available to the fish as the water continues to warm up.

Some of our private water stretches have opened up as well. Our most popular trophy trout fishery, the North Fork of the South Platte, is now open despite Robert’s Tunnel still being closed. As long as the snowmelt keeps the river above 50 cfs (which it will) the Meadows will stay open and you can have your shot at a fish of a lifetime. The Meadows only allows 1 group per beat so if you want to fish this incredible stretch, be sure to give us some notice and we will do our best to get you on this exclusive stretch. Our good friend Peggy Stevinson landed a 31″ beast on a streamer here just a couple of days ago!

Some of the small streams that we offer guided fly fishing on have started fishing as well. Run off and night time temps will have a large influence on how productive these will fish. Be sure to give us a call (303) 325-5515 or shoot us an email if you want to get out and hunt some trout!
